Ribs and Wraps

Sometimes I have an idea for a design and it just takes on a life of its own! This time the idea I came up with was for a sock pattern with wrapped rib columns running up the edge of the foot and up the centre of the leg. But I like to alternate the items that I release and with a sock pattern planned for August and the end of September I needed something that wasn’t a sock to fill the gap.

For me, September is the perfect time to start thinking about fingerless mitts. Of course, right now we’re having a bonus summer and it’s hotter now than when I knit my mitts – but when the cold weather comes mitts are the first accessory I reach for! So I took my sock design and give it a bit of a twist – instead of having the pattern up the side of the sock, it would go up the outside of the hand and I got my Aisneach Mitts.

While I was knitting them, I was taking photos for my patrons and I put the right hand mitt on to the left hand. I took loads of photos and it wasn’t until I saw them on the computer that I realised I’d made a mistake. Lucky for me, the mitts look great on both hands!

When you wear them the way they’re written, you get a beautiful subtle pattern wrapping around the outside of the hand, just like I intended. When you swap them over, you get a bold statement piece with the rib pattern covering half of the back of the hand. I love that you can get two different looks from a single pair of mitts! My husband suggests knitting two lefts or two rights and mixing them up for a  different look on each hand, but I think that might be going a little too far!

I’m still planning on knitting the socks that were behind the inspiration for Aisneach but they won’t be coming out until sometime in 2022. I’m also planning a matching hat and cowl pattern for the end of the year, so keep an eye out for the whole set!

You can get 25% off Aisneach Mitts with the code RibSale until midnight (UTC) on the 7th September 2021. The pattern is also on LoveCrafts and Etsy!

If you want to find out what I’m up to between blog posts you can keep an eye on what I’m up to on Instagram, or come join me on Patreon for 50% off new releases and to find out what I’m working on for the next few of months!

Burnished Copper

For my latest pair of fingerless mitts I really wanted to play with twisted rib again. I also really wanted to make another pair similar to Dealas with a textured pattern across the back of the hand. So I combined the two ideas and we got Coppersmith! It’s a really fun pattern and once you’re
